(not so) Simple Trivia

Posted by Shawn in

Okay, do you know who said the following quote?

"We owe to the Jews a system of ethics which, even if it were entirely separated from the supernatural, would be incomparably the most precious possession of mankind, worth in fact the fruits of all wisdom and learning put together."

I would doubt that very many, if anyone, will know the answer to this, but that's not a slight in any way. I didn't know until I just read it. Nor is this necessarily intended to be anything profound from me. It's just that given the time in history that it was said and the particular individual that made the statement, I thought it interesting. (He's kind of a personal hero of mine in a lot of ways, though not necessarily morally.)

Generally speaking, I've never considered this man a man of faith, even given his very high status within the scope of my opinion. (I say this based on his personal testimony in public life as I've read of it, which would be the only thing that I could possibly know of him. I would most definitely prefer to be missing some key piece of information that would show my opinion to be grossly untrue.)

So, his not being a man that knows the Lord unto salvation, but a particularly wise man never the less, I actually do find the wisdom and boldness of his statement very profound. It makes me think of Proverbs 14:33.

It's a terribly tough trivia question, so I'll give you a hint. The quote comes from a Feb. 8, 1920 article in the "Illustrated Sunday Herald". I learned of it through a secular opinion article.

And hey, you have to guess or simply know the answer. No looking it up somewhere...
